It has been officially confirmed that the former emperor, Napoleon Bonaparte, has surrendered to a British naval captain.

On the 15th July, Napoleon and his suite boarded HMS Bellerophon, popularly known to sailors as Billy Ruffian, and formally surrendered to Captain Maitland. The ship was off Rochefort at the time as part of the blockade being maintained on La Rochelle.

It is understood that Napoleon was hoping to take ship to America, where he expected to be warmly received. The British blockade made this impossible. Discovering that the Prussians had put a price on his head, he decided that he had no choice. He had to surrender to the Brits.

Bellerophon set sail for England on the 16th and is expected to arrive within the next few days.
